Konrad Beckhaus

Konrad Friedrich Ludwig Beckhaus (born August 18, 1821 in Lingen (Ems) , † August 13, 1890 in Höxter ) was a German Protestant theologian , botanist , mycologist and lepidopterologist (butterfly scientist).

Beckhaus was born as the son of Friedrich and Elisabeth Beckhaus. Since his parents separated, he grew up in Bielefeld , his mother's home. He graduated from high school there in 1838 and studied first natural sciences, then Protestant theology at the Universities of Halle , Tübingen , and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . In 1847 he became assistant preacher and rector of the community school in Höxter, where in 1851 he also took over the office of pastor in Sankt Kiliani and in 1857 superintendent for the Paderborn parish .

In addition to his professional obligations, Beckhaus was an internationally known florist and mycologist. In his time he was considered the best expert on the Westphalian flora, especially the mosses and mushrooms. He was also a profound expert on the Westphalian butterfly fauna.
