National Conservatory

The National Conservatory ( Greek Εθνικό Ωδείο Ethniko Odio ) in Athens is next to the Athens Conservatory the most important university for music in Greece .

The college was founded in 1926 by the composer Manolis Kalomiris together with some artists and sponsors. Unlike the Athens Conservatory, it also promotes music education for young people and has branches across the country, as well as one in Egypt and one in Cyprus . Graduates included the singer Maria Callas and the conductor Teodor Currentzis .

In 1940 the National Opera was founded at the Conservatory as an independent institution, two thirds of which were conservatory graduates.
