Konstantin Somov ( Russian Константин Андреевич Сомов ; born November 18 . Jul / the 30th November  1869 greg. In St. Petersburg , Russian Empire , died 6. May 1939 in Paris ) was a Russian painter and graphic artist .

Life

Born as the son of the art scholar and later senior curator of the Hermitage Andrei Ivanovich Somow (1830-1909), he grew up with two siblings in Saint Petersburg. His brother Alexander (1867-1903) was an art scholar and worked on museum affairs in the Ministry of Finance. Like Constantine, his sister Anna (1873–1945) was an artist .

In the period from 1888 to 1897 Somow studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art . After graduating, he went to Paris , where he studied at a private academy for the next two years. After returning from Paris, he settled in Saint Petersburg in 1899. At an early age, Somow made the acquaintance of Alexander Benois ( Benua ), Walter Nouvelle ( Nuwel ) and Dmitri Filossofow , with whom he helped found the Mir Iskusstwa association. At the same time he was a co-founder of the magazine of the same name ("Kunstwelt").

In 1913 he became a full member of the Petersburg Art Academy. In 1918 he became a professor at the Petrograd State Art School . Somov left Russia in 1923. Two years later he settled in France , where he died in Paris in 1939. He found his final resting place in a southern Paris suburb in the Russian cemetery of Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois .

Exhibitions and art trade

His works, mainly portraits and landscape paintings , are exhibited today in the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum . The portrait of the composer Sergei Wassiljewitsch Rachmaninov , who also emigrated to the USA and who had left Russia in 1917 , also hangs there.

In 2007, an extensive collection of Somov pictures, photographs and objects from the artist's possession came up for auction at Christie's auction house: The "Somov Collection" comprised around 50 works by the artist. The picture The boxer rescued - including the gloves of the portrayed shirtless boxer - the sum of 580,500 pounds sterling, the rest of the vagabond ( The stroller's rest ) 972,500 pounds and the romantic chase scene The romantic pursuit , even the record sum of 1,588,500 British Pound. The 1936 portrait in profile of Boris Snejkowsky , signed by the artist as a gift for the person portrayed, was also auctioned at Christie's in 2018 and sold for 72,500 pounds. On the same day, several portraits of this artist's favorite model came up for sale at the auction.

The pianist and composer Vladimir Shinov dedicated a piece to Somow on his album Heart of Wayfaring - Piano Music 2001-2002 , released in 2003, entitled To Constantin Somov .
