Constantine Shayne

Konstantin Shayne ( Russian Константин Шэйн ; born November 29, 1888 in Kharkov , Russian Empire ; † November 15, 1974 in Los Angeles , California ) was a Russian - American actor.

Life

Konstantin Shayne was born in Charkow, which is in what is now Ukraine , but was then in the Russian Empire. During the Russian Civil War he served in General Wrangel's army . While fleeing from the victorious communists, Shayne emigrated from Russia to the United States. There he made his film debut in 1938 at the age of 50. With his strong accent, Shayne was often cast in the role of the often threatening or mysterious foreigner, primarily Russian. In 1946 he played a reformed National Socialist in the thriller The Stranger's Trail , which dominates the first 15 minutes of the film, but is then murdered by Orson Welles ' film villains. In Alfred Hitchcock's classic film Vertigo (1957) Shayne played the supporting role of the bookseller Pop Libel, who is well informed about historical anecdotes from San Francisco. On television, Shayne appeared in classics such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents and 77 Sunset Strip .

By 1965 Shayne was involved in around 50 film and television productions. His sister was the actress Tamara Shayne (1902–1983), who was married to the character actor Akim Tamiroff and with whom he also appeared in the film Fate in Vienna . He was married twice and had children. Konstantin Shayne died in Los Angeles at the age of 85.
