Kontagora is a city in the Nigerian state of Niger and is located in the northwest of Nigeria . According to an estimate from 2007, it has 102,888 inhabitants.

The various small tribal principalities into which the area of Kontagora was originally divided - Aguarra, Dakka-Karri, Dukawa and Ngaski - were conquered by the Fulbe between 1858 and 1864 and united into an emirate that was dependent on the Sultanate of Sokoto . In 1901 the emirate fell under British rule and was incorporated into the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria .

Kontagora and its surroundings form one of the 25 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state of Niger with an area of 2080.57 km². In the penultimate census in 1991, the LGA had 138,080 inhabitants and thus a population density of 66 inhabitants per km². In the city itself 63,994 inhabitants were counted.

In response to the Mohammed cartoons , at least two people were killed and four churches were set on fire in February 2006. In Kontagora, as in the entire north of Niger, the Sharia is in force.
