Roger De Vlaeminck on the Koppenberg |
The Koppenberg is a 78 m high elevation in the Belgian province of East Flanders . On the Koppenberg there is the Koppenbergbos , a 29 hectare protected forest. The mountain is also part of several cycling events , such as the Koppenbergcross and the Tour of Flanders .
Up until 2015, the Koppenberg was part of the cycling classic Tour of Flanders a total of 25 times . It is considered one of the demanding climbs of this one-day race. On the 600 m route, 64 vertical meters have to be overcome with an average of 11.6% and a maximum of 22% incline on cobblestones. This hill is difficult to climb on a racing bike, especially in wet weather. Falls are also not uncommon. Jesper Skibby was hit by the jury's car in 1987 and then fell. After the event in 1987, the Koppenberg was removed from the program of the Tour of Flanders and re-included in the program in 2002. The organizer of the Tour of Flanders puts the number of spectators on the Koppenberg at 2500.
The second well-known cycling event on the Koppenberg is the Koppenbergcross. This cyclocross race , which takes place annually on November 1st, is part of the GvA Trofee (now DVV verzekeringen trofee).
