The grain storage test is a monument protected former warehouse in Berlin district of Moabit . The storage facility is located directly on the Berlin-Spandau shipping canal at the northern end of the former Hamburg and Lehrter freight depot and has the postal address Heidestrasse 20c .

Building

The Kornversuchsspeicher is a six-storey red brick building with a flat commercial annex. It was built between 1897 and 1898 by the construction company Hermann Streubel . The principal was the agricultural cooperative . The building had five bulk floors and four silos with a total capacity of 1130 tons of grain.

In 1915 an extension was built, which is supported by a reinforced concrete skeleton .

In 2018 there was an artistic temporary use. Gutting work began in 2019 so that only the outer parts of the building will be preserved. In the newly emerging Europacity , the Kornversuchsspeicher is to become the landmark of the “Wasserstadt Mitte”: Offices will be built on the upper floors, and meeting places that could also be used artistically will be located below.

history

The grain trial storage facility served the scientific investigation of grain storage as well as the comparative evaluation of the silo and bulk floor storage and the testing of modern machine technology. Organizationally, it was initially attached to the Institute for Fermentation Trade and from 1907 to the Research Institute for Grain Processing .
