A Koronis ( Greek ἡ κορωνίς, -ίδος hē korōnís, -ídos , plural αἱ κορωνίδες hai korōnídes ) is an ancient Greek diacritical mark. It is used to identify the Krasis and is placed over the vowel of the second part. An exception are connections with ἑτέρος such as θᾱτέρου (from τοῦ ἑτέρου ). The contraction rules apply .

Examples

  • τὸ ἱμάτιον > θοιμάτιον ( breath assimilation without marking the krasis by a coronis )

typography

The coronis looks exactly like the spiritus lenis (i.e. mostly similar to an apostrophe ) and is also set with the same type of printing. It is a separate character in the Unicode block Combining Diacritical Marks under the code point U + 0343. This also allows a different representation.
