A Kroužek ([ kroʊ̯ʒɛk ] . Tschech diminutive to Kruh , Ring '), also About circle , circular / ring accent or over set Ringel called a is diacritical mark to identify a particular pronunciation emphasis or a letter. There is a small circle (˚) in the middle above the letter - not to be confused with a degree symbol . It occurs in Czech , Danish , Norwegian and Swedish , among others . In German it is occasionally used to transcribe a sound used in several dialects (such as the Bavarian dialects ).
Occurrence
The sign has different meanings in the individual languages:
- In Czech the letter ů [ uː ] is pronounced (originated from o over uo to ů , where originally the o was written in lower case over the u )
- In Danish, Norwegian and Swedish featuring the å the sounds [ ɔ ] or [ ø ], born of aa , originally the one a was little written about the other

Character sets
Kroužek does not appear in the ASCII character set . In the character sets of the ISO 8859 family, selected characters appear with Kroužek, ISO 8859-1 contains Å and å . , in ISO 8859-2 there are Ů and ů .
Unicode contains other prefabricated characters with Kroužek and can represent any characters with acute by adding a combining Kroužek U + 030A (◌̊).
TeX and LaTeX
TeX and LaTeX 2.09 do not know the general ring accent, they can only represent the letter Å . LaTeX2e can display any characters with a ring. There are two different commands for this:
- In text mode for text typesetting,
\r a
a å is generated . - In the mathematical formula for the mode set generates
\mathring a
the formula å.
However, it is possible to use \ aa {} to represent å .
input
With the German standard keyboard layout T2 , the character is entered as Alt Gr+ o. This combination acts as a dead key , i.e. H. must be entered before the basic letter.
