History and population

During the Ottoman period (1570 / 71–1878) population censuses were carried out for the purpose of collecting taxes. Therefore, only the (male) heads of household were counted. In Kuruova in 1831 there were exactly 65 men, all of whom were Turks.

After the British took control in 1878, their first census in 1891 resulted in 136 Turkish residents. However, that number rose to 273 within ten years. In the following censuses, the population fluctuated between 291 (1911) and 213 (1921), whereas in 1931 it was 211. After all, the village numbered 19 Greeks at that time. While their share fell to two by 1946, the number of Turkish villagers rose to 261, in 1960 even to 280. Since then, no Greeks have lived in the village.

In 1964, at the time of the Turkish administration of Cyprus , Kuruova was administratively part of the Mehmetçik enclave and took in refugees from other villages. No one fled the town during the riots. According to Richard Patrick, there were no more refugees living in the village in 1971.

In 1973 there were 300 Turkish residents, in 1978 there were only 140. This population development is due to the geographical distance between the village and the larger towns. Many young people migrated to the cities or emigrated. In 2006 there were 145 Turks in the village, in 2011 there were 132.
