Corps spirit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Korpsgeist [ˈkoːa̯ɡaɪ̯st] or Corpsgeist ( French corps 'body (shank)'; from the Latin corpus 'body') is an expression of the “ we-feeling ” of an ingroup .

definition

The term is derived from the French esprit de corps , which initially denotes a community of people of the same class. A historical definition can be found in Brockhaus from 1911, who writes that the spirit of the corps is “the most active participation of each individual in the common good of all, setting aside all egotistical and personal considerations”.

Of esprit de corps we speak to today's definition when an emotional Community occurring within an objectively definable social group toward uniformly occurs to the outside and show mutual solidarity acts and thereby promotes personal ties beyond the purely social measure.

In a negative sense, this term is often associated with “ arrogance of class ”.

history

Even the medieval orders of knights were shaped by the spirit of the corps by wearing uniform clothing, medals, banners and seals. The spirit of the corps gained further importance in the Prussian army in the early modern times , when noble officers, members of a supposedly exclusive class, developed an esprit de corps with their own code of conduct and uniform clothing independent of rank. This behavior was also observed in the 19th century at German universities and among student associations . The German lawyer Ernst Wichert wrote:

"The corps spirit grew rampant at the universities and gradually injected itself into the fraternities who did not want to appear inferior"

- Ernst Wichert, 1899

At present, the spirit of the corps is predominantly to be found in the military , the police and also in politics . At the beginning of 2017, when cases of abuse in the Bundeswehr in Pfullendorf and Sondershausen became known, a public debate about the corps spirit in the German armed forces was triggered.

The corps spirit from the United States of America has also found its way into the European economy and is viewed as an instrument of modern management and employee motivation. An example is the Wal-Mart company , where employees shout slogans at the beginning of each day and support this with gestures such as the so-called squiggly .
