Cosmas of Aitolia

Saint Cosmas of Aitolia (* 1714 in Mega Dendron , Aitonia , † August 24, 1779 in Berat ) was a Greek Orthodox monk from Mount Athos . In the Orthodox Church he is regarded as an apostle-like .
Life
Kosmas first studied Greek and theology . After a visit to Mount Athos, he became a monk and attended the local theological school. He then traveled to northern and western Greece to convince Orthodox Christians to start schools. Within sixteen years he had founded more than 100 schools. However, he rejected the use of Albanian because, according to him, Greek was "the language of the church".
After the Greek Revolution of 1770, which was supported by Russia, the Ottomans suspected him of being a Russian spy. For this reason he was arrested and executed on August 24, 1779 in Berat.
On April 20, 1961, Kosmas of Aitolia was canonized by Athenagoras , the Patriarch of Constantinople . The day of remembrance of the apostle-like Kosmas Aitolos is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on August 24th, the day of his martyrdom .
