Bandama with Kossou reservoir |
The Kossoustausee ( French Lac de Kossou ) is the largest lake in Côte d'Ivoire ( Ivory Coast ). It is located in the middle of the country on the White Bandama . The dam (see also Kossou power station ) was built from 1969 to 1972 near Kossou north of Yamoussoukro .
A dam made of rock fill material serves as a barrier structure . It is up to 58 m high, 1500 m long and has a structure volume of 5.2 million m³. The white and red bandama, which unite in the reservoir to form the bandama, are dammed. The reservoir is one of the largest on earth. The lake is more than three times the size of Lake Geneva , but it was not fully dammed until 1979 because the rainfall was too low before. For this reason, the full power generation could not initially be achieved.
The Kossou project was by far the most expensive hydropower plant in Ivory Coast. Around 85,000 residents, the Baule , had to be relocated for the reservoir .
The Kossoustausee is the third of five reservoirs in the Ivory Coast. The following were built in this order:
- Ayamé I 1962
- Ayamé II 1965
- Kossou 1969 to 1972 with 174 MW
- Kossou II (Taabo) 1975 to 1979 with 210 MW
- Buyo 1980 with 165 MW
Together they have an installed capacity of 600 MW.
