The Taabo power plant ( French Aménagement hydroélectrique or Barrage hydroélectrique de Taabo ) is located in the Lagunes region of the Ivory Coast . The dam of the power station dams the Bandama . The Kossou power plant is located about 120 km upstream .
dam
The dam is an earth and stone rubble dam with a height of 34 m. The length of the dam crest is 6,600 m (or 7,500 m). With the maximum storage target , the associated reservoir extends over an area of around 69 km² and holds 630 million m³ of water.
The dam was built from 1975 to 1979. The damming began in February 1978. The flood discharge capacity is 4,460 m³ / s, but the dam has no bottom outlet .
power plant
The Taabo power plant with an installed capacity of 210 MW - three machines with a maximum capacity of 70 MW each - is the largest of the six hydropower plants currently in the Ivory Coast. The power plant was commissioned in 1979. It serves to cover the base load . The Francis turbines for the machines were supplied by Vevey and the associated generators by Westinghouse .
The power station is owned by the state but is operated by the Compagnie Ivoirienne d'Electricité (CIE).
Others
The electricity industry in Ivory Coast is characterized by the fact that there is no reserve capacity whatsoever, so that the failure of a larger power plant inevitably leads to power cuts (as of 2011).
Annual electricity production in Ivory Coast was 2 billion kWh in 1990 and 5.9 billion kWh in 2010. The share of hydropower in electricity generation fell from almost 67% in 1990 to only 27% in 2010. In order to be able to continue to cover the increasing demand for electricity, u. a. further hydropower plants are to be built.
A hydropower plant with an output of 275 MW is to be built in Soubré on the Sassandra , financed to a large extent by a loan from the Chinese EXIMBANK . The estimated cost is 331 billion FCFA . Another hydropower plant with a capacity of 44 MW is to be built on the Bandama , approx. 23 km below the Taabo dam.
The average price per kWh in Ivory Coast is 0.12 US cents . The IMF is urging the government to increase electricity prices in order to be able to finance the modernization and expansion of the electricity supply.
