The Kossou power plant ( French Aménagement hydroélectrique or Barrage hydroélectrique de Kossou ) is located in the Marahoué region of the Ivory Coast . The dam of the power station dams the Bandama . The Taabo power plant is located around 120 km downstream .

dam

The dam is an earth and stone rubble dam with a height of 58 m. The length of the dam crest is 1,500 m and its width 10 m. At the maximum storage target , the associated Kossoustausee extends over an area of around 1,855 km² and holds 28.8 billion m³ of water.

The dam was built from 1969 to 1972 by the Italian company Impregilo . The cost was 29 billion FCFA .

With an installed capacity of 174 MW - three machines with a maximum capacity of 58 MW each - the Kossou power plant is the second largest of the six hydropower plants currently in the Ivory Coast. It serves to cover the base load . The power plant was commissioned in 1972 with initially two machines, and in 1973 the third machine was connected to the grid. The Francis turbines and the associated generators for the machines were supplied by GIE .

The power station is owned by the state but is operated by the Compagnie Ivoirienne d'Electricité (CIE).

Others

The construction of the dam and the subsequent impoundment meant that 75,000 people had to leave their country.
