The Kosterbrücke is a road bridge over the Ruhr in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany). It connects Welper, south of the river, with Stiepel, to the north . The city boundary between Hattingen and Bochum is roughly in the middle of the river. On the Hattinger side, the street running over the bridge is called Hüttenstraße , on the Bochum side it is Kosterstraße .
Surname
The street name Kosterbrücke and the name, which is still used in the local parlance today, the term for the southern Ruhr floodplain area under the bridge, goes back to the Kosthaus location, which was recorded in the Prussian first and in the new recording . This was located on the bridge at the time or (temporarily) on the ferry . Today at this point in Welper there is the street An der Kost , which leads under the bridge.
history
In connection with the founding of the Henrichshütte in 1854, a wooden bridge was built that lasted for six years. It was followed by a wooden bridge that was in operation for 50 years. In 1910 a reinforced concrete bridge followed, which was used for 15 years. A tram line to Stiepel also ran over the bridge following it.
Today's bridge is the fifth bridge at this point. It is a haunched girder bridge made of prestressed concrete . It has a wingspan of 78.50 m. It was built between 1978 and 1979 and cost 20 million German marks . At that time, the new bridge was primarily intended to improve the transport connections for the Henrichshütte in Hattingen. However, the steelworks was gradually closed from 1987. With four lanes for highway 705 , the bridge is now completely oversized.
