Occurrence, habitat and way of life

The Kotosh prairie mouse is endemic to the Huánuco region in Peru and is known from two localities there, from Caserío San Pedro de Carpish and from the Huanacaure forest in the Cordillera de Carpis. It lives in cloud forests above 2400 m. Nothing is known about their way of life.

status

The Kotosh prairie mouse is not currently on the IUCN Red List. However, since the Peruvian cloud forests show a high degree of species loss, the establishment of more protected areas in the region is considered necessary.
