Boris Kryštufek (* 1954 in Kranj ) is a Slovenian nature conservation biologist with expertise in taxonomy , evolution , phylogeography , biogeography and the conservation of land mammals.

Life

1973 Kryštufek began studying biology at the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana . In 1978 he became an intern at the Slovenian Museum of Natural History (Prirodoslovni muzej Slovenije) in Ljubljana . In the same year he received a study on morphological and chromosomal studies on hedgehogs the Bachelor of Science at the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana. From 1980 to 1982 he was curatorial assistant at the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. From 1982 to 1995 he was a curator, including senior curator from 1991 to 1995. In 1988 he was at the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana with the thesis Taksonomska diferenciacija, zoogeografija in ekologija voluharic (Arvicolidae, Rodentia, Mammalia) v Sloveniji (Taxonomic differentiation, zoogeography and ecology of voles in Slovenia) for Ph.D. PhD in life sciences . In 1994 he became an assistant professor at the Faculty of Education at the University of Maribor . In 1999 he became a member of the Museum Council . Today he is the head of the Vertebrate Department of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History.

Since 2001, Kryštufek has been working at the Science and Research Center of Primorska University, where he heads the Institute for Biodiversity Studies . Since 2000 he has been an associate professor of zoology at the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana. At both universities he gives lectures on systematic zoology in the basic course and on the biology of vertebrates as well as on nature conservation biology in postgraduate studies . Kryštufek has carried out various research and conservation projects in Southeastern Europe , Asia Minor and South Africa , as well as excursions to various European countries, including the Czech Republic , Germany , Italy , Norway and North America and Southeast Asia . Another project is the long-term monitoring of the population biology of the dormouse .

Kryštufek's research focuses on the taxonomy of mammals, zoogeography and biogeographical patterns and processes. He is the author of several revisions of genera and species, as well as studies of the mammalian fauna in Slovenia, the Balkans and Turkey. Kryštufek is the first to describe three rodent species, a mole species and a mole subspecies. These include the Dogramaci vole ( Microtus dogramacii , 1999), the Anatolian vole ( Microtus anatolicus , 2002), the short-snouted acacia mouse ( Grammomys brevirostris , 2008), Talpa martinorum (2018) and the subspecies Talpa Stankovici Montenegrina (1994) of the Balkans -Mole .

Kryštufek has published more than 120 scientific articles in Slovenian and international journals, as well as many specialist articles, chapters in monographs and other contributions. He also works on the editorial board of several international magazines, conferences and commissions. In 2017 he was co-author of the chapter on the burrowers (Cricetidae) in the seventh volume of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World . In 2018, he and Masaharu Motokawa wrote the chapter on moles (Talpidae) in the eighth volume of the Handbook of the of the Mammals of the World .

Awards and dedication names

1986 Krystufek was by zoologist Savo Brelih (1927-2012) in the epithet of the flea - taxon Ctenophthalmus (Medioctenophthaltnus) nifetodes krystufeki from the Bistra mountain range in Macedonia honored. He has twice received the Valvasor Prize , the most prestigious museological award in Slovenia; in 2011 for the museum comic and the exhibition Skrivnostna smrt mlade Leonore (The Mysterious Death of Young Leonore) and in 2016 for the exhibition Naše malo veliko morje (Our Little Sea).
