The family name is by the word Kotte ; Feces ; Kate ; originated. A Kotte or Kate was in 17./18. Century a building in which preferably day laborers , the so-called "Kötter" (in Silesian and in Prussia cottagers ) lived, who did not own land. This means that the people who then bore one of these forms of name were day laborers. With the development of family names, a large number of similar names emerged.
