history

The construction of the hut is closely related to the Gotthard section founded in 1881. In the beginning, the section mainly counted academics, military personnel and high officials among its members. Around nine years later, the section decided to build a hut and decided to finance the construction, which was completed in the same year (1890). The inauguration took place on May 18, 1890. The construction costs at that time were around CHF 3,000.

The small hut became more and more successful, so that it was expanded to 28 in 1904 and 70 in 1912. In the winter of 1919/20 the Kröntenhütte was badly damaged by a cornice demolition . The northwest corner was literally knocked away and the upper part of the building pushed forward. In the spring it was provisionally repaired. A new hut was planned a little further northeast of the old stand. It was inaugurated in 1921. In the 1930s there was an expansion to 60 places, which was handed over to its destination on September 1, 1940. Since then, the hut has been expanded again and again. Today it has a modern sewage system, its own hydroelectric power station and other amenities.

At the General Assembly on January 30, 2010, the Gotthard Section decided to further expand the hut. The renovation is planned for 1.4 million CHF.

A comprehensive structural improvement was carried out in 2014/15. Except for the basement with sanitary rooms and building services as well as the old quarry stone masonry from 1920/39, the building was completely demolished. On the north-east side, the hut was widened again by 2.80 m over the entire length after the addition from 1987 while the ridge height remained the same.

There are now 11 guest rooms (previously 7) with 5 to 10 beds, two hut parlors with a total of 80 seats, a new, modern kitchen with pantries and cold room, a hut keeper's apartment with shower and toilet, a stairwell in accordance with fire protection guidelines as well as vestibules, shoe and drying rooms .
