The Hemweg power plant is a combined cycle power plant in Amsterdam , North Holland Province , Netherlands . It has an installed capacity of 435 (or 440) MW . The power plant is owned by Vattenfall and operated by Vattenfall.

history

The Hemweg power plant in 1960

Construction of the Hemweg power plant, initially fired exclusively with hard coal, began in 1948. The first unit went into operation in 1952, and the official opening took place on October 3, 1953. Three more units followed by 1954, each with an electrical output of 52.8 MW. These original four blocks were shut down in 1978. Until 1980, the building with a striking row of eight 80 meter high chimneys was characteristic of the cityscape in the western port area of Amsterdam.

Two new blocks were added in the 1960s. These plants went into operation in 1966 and 1968 and could burn natural gas and oil. At that time, the new chimney was the highest point in Amsterdam at 150 meters. Unit 7 was put into operation in 1979. In 1988, this plant was expanded to include a gas turbine, which turned Block 7 into a gas and steam combined cycle power plant with a maximum effective electrical output of 599 MW. Blocks 5 to 7 have since been shut down and demolished.

In 1994, Unit 8 was added, which was fired with hard coal. The effective output of the plant was 650 MW. On May 18, 2018, the Dutch government decided to end coal-fired power generation in the Hemweg and Amer power plants before 2025. The Hemweg power plant emitted around 3.6 megatons of carbon dioxide in 2018 ; this was almost two percent of the total Dutch CO 2 emissions. The operator Vattenfall received a loss compensation of 52.5 million euros for the early shutdown. The last coal was burned on December 21, 2019, after which Unit 8 was shut down on December 23, 2019. The dismantling is to begin in 2020.

Unit 9 was put into operation in 2012 and consists of a gas turbine and a downstream steam turbine . A waste heat steam generator is connected to the gas turbine , which then supplies the steam turbine. The efficiency of the system is 59%.
