The Kandergrund power plant is a medium - pressure run-of-river power plant , which was built between 1907 and 1910 mainly to supply the Lötschbergbahn with energy . The water from the Kander is collected below Kandersteg and fed through a 4200 meter long inlet tunnel to a water tower above Kandergrund for energy use , from where it reaches the machine house in the valley floor via pressure pipes .

Plant from 1910

In the machine room 5 were Pelton turbines installed - three for the supply of Lötschbergbahn 16 2 / 3 Hz power and two for the supply of the BKW network with the then usual frequency of 40 Hz, which was increased to 50 Hz only 1,921th Each turbine had an output of 4,000 hp, and the single-phase generators for the traction power supply had an apparent output of 2,700 kVA.

Plant from 1991

The facility was renewed in 1991. The two Pelton turbines installed have a combined output of 18.8 MW, the average annual production is 97 GWh. The power plant is owned by BKW Energie.
