According to the legend written by Kadlubek , Krak (or Krakus ) is said to have been a Duke of the Vandals on the Wandalus River. According to today's history, its existence can not be proven. He is considered the alleged founder of the city of Kraków ( Polish: Kraków ). Krak is said to have defeated the man-eating Wawel dragon living at the foot of the Wawel by a ruse . The construction of the Wawel Castle is also attributed to him.

According to Wincenty Kadłubek , he was also the father of Wanda , who would become Queen (of the Poles) after his death and thereby marry a German knight. According to the 16th century version, Wanda found the latter unacceptable and killed himself. According to the earlier version, the German knight died, but Wanda had a long life.

Even before Kadłubek, Cosmas of Prague had invented the legend of Krok and his daughter Libussa .
