The Podenco Ibicenco ( Catalan : Ca Eivissenc ) is a breed of dogs from Spain recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 5, Section 7, Standard No. 89 ).
Origin and history
The greyhound-like Podenco Ibicenco is probably the best-known breed from the Podencos group . Its area of origin are to Spain belonging to the Balearic Islands . The island of Ibiza gave it its name, but you can find it today on all the islands of the Balearic Islands as well as on the Spanish mainland, especially in Catalonia .
One assumption about the origin of this breed is that its progenitor is the Tesem , who is also associated with the pharaoh dog (Kelb tal-Fenek) , which is native to Malta . One theory that has not yet been proven is that the Phoenicians are said to have spread this type of dog across the entire Mediterranean . However, it is also conceivable that the Podencos , like the Pharaoh Hound and the Cirneco dell 'Etna, developed from Mediterranean pariah dogs and owe their appearance less to a common ancestor than to the specific requirements of their respective home regions.
In 1929 the Podenco Ibicenco came to England , where it is still bred today. On the continent it was known for a long time as the Pharaoh's dog , a term first used in 1906 by the Swiss Dr. Carl von Muralt from Zurich was used in an article in a Swiss hunting magazine about hunting in the Balearic Islands. In 1963 the FCI passed a breed standard that was essentially based on the Podenco Ibicenco model, but which made it possible to register all standing-eared, greyhound-like dogs from the Mediterranean area as pharaoh dogs . But since since 1931 one submitted by Spain at the FCI breed standard for the Ibizan Hound was, there was de facto two breed standards for the same race. In 1977 the FCI lifted this standard again and assigned the name Pharaoh Hound to Kelb tal-Fenek from Malta.
description
The Podenco Ibicenco is an agile and intelligent dog that is not easy to train. There are a total of three types of hair, namely straight hair, wire hair and long hair, with the wire haired and the long haired variety being judged together at breeding shows. The color is preferably white and red, or a single color white or red. Fawn-colored coloring is permitted, but not for the smooth-haired variety. As is typical of the podenco, it can hardly be deterred from hunting, so that it is often not possible to take it off while walking. Before deciding on such a dog, you should therefore carefully check whether you have the opportunity to enable it to run freely in safe terrain, which is essential for species-appropriate keeping. Typically he is very quiet, friendly and gentle in the apartment. Noticeable are his very large erect ears, which he has in common with all Podencos. His typical gait is the long, very elegant trot. When tracking down prey, it indicates this by violently wagging its tail. What is striking here is the white tip of the tail given to every pure-bred Podenco. The hunt is carried out at a loud voice.
use
The Ibizan Hound is to hunt on small game used. Typical hunting prey is the wild rabbit , as with all Podencos . The Podenco Ibicenco is mostly used in larger packs for hunting. In the tall grass or bushes, the dogs orient themselves with sometimes high jumps until they have found a rabbit. The hiding place is encircled by the pack and a dog jumps forward to catch the prey.
Sometimes the dogs roam freely on their owners' extensive property, and it is not uncommon for them to join wandering vacationers. However, such a dog is by no means ownerless.
Remarks
Although known for a long time, the Podenco Ibicenco was a rather rare occurrence in German-speaking countries for a long time. To date there are only a few breeders. In Germany there was a club of its own until 1998 which, in addition to the Podenco Ibicenco, also looked after the Cirneco dell 'Etna , the Podengo Português and the Podenco Canario . After the club dissolved itself, the VDH transferred the care of the breeds to the German Greyhound Breeding and Racing Association (DWZRV) on January 1st, 1999. In Switzerland, the Swiss Club for Mediterranean Greyhounds looks after the Podenco Ibicenco.
In recent years Podencos from different regions of Spain have been increasingly placed in Germany and neighboring countries by animal welfare organizations. It also happens that isolated Podenco Ibicenco are sorted out by a recognized breeder in Spain, and by an organization u. a. can also be conveyed to Germany.
