The Podengo Português is a dog breed from Portugal recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale ( FCI Group 5, Section 7, Standard No. 94 ).
Origin and history
The Podengo Português belongs to the group of greyhound- like Mediterranean hunting dogs , which can be found in various breeds or local types all over the Iberian Peninsula , the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands . In contrast to the Spanish spelling Podenco , the spelling used in Portuguese and Galician is Poden g o . The Podengo Português was originally a landrace that came in numerous sizes and fur variants and was particularly widespread in the north and east of Portugal. It was not until 1933 that the existing population began to be systematically recorded and classified into the six varieties that are still common today. The official breed standard for the Podengo Português has existed since 1954.
description
The Podengo Português is bred in three sizes, each available as a wire-haired and a short-haired variety. The colors are yellow, fawn (in all shades from light to very dark) and black (diluted or washed out), monochrome with or without white markings, or white with markings.
Podengo Português Grande (large)
At 55 to 70 cm and 20 to 30 kg, the Podengo Grande is the largest representative of this breed and at the same time the rarest. It is mainly bred in the east of the country.
Podengo Português Médio (medium)
At a height of 40 to 54 cm at the withers, the Podengo Médio weighs 16 to 20 kg. Its distribution area is mainly in the north of Portugal.
Podengo Português Pequeno (small)
The Podengo Pequeno is the smallest variety at 20 to 30 cm and 4 to 6 kg. Originally found mainly in the middle of the country, in addition to its hunting use, it is now enjoying growing popularity as a domestic dog.
The Podengo Português Pequeno has been recognized by the AKC as an independent breed since 2009 and is listed in the Foundation Stock Service . Since January 1st, 2011 the breed can be exhibited in the Miscellaneous Class , the final recognition took place on January 1st, 2013.
use
Like the Spanish podencos, the podengo português is mainly used to hunt wild rabbits . The dogs find the rabbits in the thick undergrowth and drive them out so that the hunters can kill them with their rifles. The little Podengo Português sometimes also works in the rabbit hole when hunting, comparable to a terrier. The large Podengo Português is also used in large packs for hunting wild boar .
In Portugal every year in early summer there is a special breed show (Monográfica) for the breed, organized by the Clube do Podengo Português . This event is also attended by Podengo owners and breeders from all over the world. In addition to the dogs recorded in the Portuguese stud book and shown at exhibitions, there are still large, unregistered populations in the rural regions of Portugal.
