history

old hospital Düren (around 1910)

In 1417 a hospital in Düren was first mentioned in the will of the Cologne mayor Lambert van Duren, who bequeathed a Mark Cologne pagament to him. It was probably the St. Agatha Hospital, which, according to the illustrations by Wenzel Hollar, was on the corner of Weierstrasse and Wilhelmstrasse. This building was destroyed in the big city fire in 1543 and the magistrate designated a building on the site of today's Peschschule as a new "inn". From 1651 the order of the Elisabethinnen from Aachen took over the nursing on behalf of the city in the inn. In 1665 the new inn in Weierstrasse, in 1864 the Maria-Hilf-Hospital, the former Franciscan monastery next to the Marienkirche. After several years of planning, the new municipal hospital planned by Heinrich Dauer was built in Roonstrasse from 1904 to 1909 (inauguration October 27, 1909, at the same time as the water tower), an infection house was added in 1925 and a maternity home in 1936.

After the Second World War , the hospital was expanded again and again and further specialist departments were added.

On October 19, 1970, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for a new hospital right next to the old building, which was opened in 1976. The nuns had already left nursing in 1975. On January 2, 1977, the old hospital building was demolished.

The renovation of the west wing was completed on March 1, 2012.

Two identical medical centers were built in the park, namely House I for pathology and House II as a tumor center. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on May 15, 2014. The costs amounted to 7.5 million euros. The inauguration took place on November 20, 2015.

On April 10, 2014, the hospital's managing director Gereon Blum and Hartmut Krabs-Höhler, chairman of the DRK regional association in North Rhine-Westphalia, signed a cooperation agreement that was unique in North Rhine-Westphalia . For the first time, the DRK is setting up a vocational school for the rescue service at an acute hospital .

In September 2015, the hospital was awarded the OnkoZert seal of approval as a colon cancer center .

Since November 2019, the hospital has been run by a dual leadership. The management is made up of doctors Gereon Blum (managing director since 2011) and Kathleen Büttner-Hoigt.
