history

Postcard from the Neuwittelsbach sanatorium (1910)
Rudolf von Hößlin, founder of the hospital

The forerunner of the hospital was the Neuwittelsbach sanatorium , which was founded in 1885 by Privy Councilor Rudolf Ludwig Theodor Balthasar von Hoeßlin (uncle of the conductor and composer Franz von Hoeßlin ) and then managed for decades. One of the most famous patients was the physician and Nobel Prize winner Emil von Behring , who was treated in the clinic from 1907 to 1910 for his depression. In 1914 the hospital became a foundation and from 1932 a clinic for internal diseases, which was largely destroyed during the Second World War.

The ruined property was acquired by the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent de Paul in the post-war period . At the end of the 1960s, the religious order decided to build a specialist clinic for internal medicine here under its own sponsorship. After three years of construction, it was opened on May 19, 1973 and was again given the name Neuwittelsbach.

An extensive renovation took place between 1997 and 1999 to bring the hospital up to date. At the same time, the rheumatism day clinic was set up as a semi-inpatient department and the building was increased by a terrace floor in order to solve the existing space shortage. Today (as of January 2012) the hospital has a total of 132 beds .
