description

The Krasnopresnenskaya station was put into operation on March 14, 1954 within the last section of the ring line (together with the Kievskaya station ). The name of the station is derived from the toponym Krasnaja Presnja , which literally means "Red Presnja". It is Presnya originally the name of a small, well-led into an underground tube since the early 20th century tributary of the Moscow River . This also gave the town northwest of the garden ring its name. During the Soviet era, this part of the city, originally a traditional workers' neighborhood, was named Krasnaya Presnja in memory of the fierce fighting that took place there during the Russian Revolution in 1905 .

The underground station has an entrance which is located above ground in a separate vestibule building with a round floor plan and a row of Ionic columns. The building was designed by the Armenian architect Karo Alabjan and is located on the south side of Krasnaya Presnya Street. The Zuckerbäcker high-rise on Kudrinskaya Square (a few hundred meters east of the vestibule building directly before the junction of Krasnaya Presnja Street with the Garden Ring) and the main entrance to the Moscow Zoo (right across from the vestibule ) are within walking distance of the subway station the other side of the street), the United States Embassy (on the Gartenring, about ten minutes 'walk from the subway station) and the seat of the Russian government (a few minutes' walk south).

The platform hall on Krasnopresnenskaya is 35 meters below ground and is connected to the vestibule by an escalator shaft. This leads to the southern end of the hall, while from its northern end there has been a transition to the Barrikadnaja station on the Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya line since 1972 . Before this crossing was built, the platform hall ended in a cul-de-sac, at the end of which there was a sculpture composition with images of Lenin and Stalin .

Close to the Krasnopresnenskaya station is the Krasnaya Presnja vehicle depot on the Kolzewaya line, which is why trains from the direction of Kievskaya that go to this depot end at Krasnopresnenskaya.

architecture

The central platform with the 9.5-meter-wide platform hall in its center is covered by an arched vault, which is supported by two arcade-like rows of pylons . Typically for Moscow subway stations in the early post-war period, the hall has a very splendid and spacious shape. In allusion to the toponym "Red Presnja", the base of the pylons is clad in dark red marble throughout . Above the pylons on the side of the platform hall there are relief compositions (14 in total) with stylized motifs of the workers' struggles during the revolution in 1905 and the October revolution in 1917. The light comes from the gilded chandeliers on the top of the vault. The floor is made up of simple patterns of light red, gray and black granite slabs . The walls above the two tracks are clad with white marble from the Urals .
