The Presnja ( Russian Пресня ) is a 4.5 km long river in Moscow ( Russia ) and a left tributary of the Moskva . In 1908 the Presnja was led into an underground concrete pipe. In the 19th century the alternative name Sinitschka (Russian Синичка ) was also known for the river .

The source of the river is in the north of Moscow near the arterial road " Leningrader Prospect ", from there the Presnja flows in a southerly direction to its mouth, which is almost exactly at the level of the White House on the Moscow River. Today the Presnja is enclosed in the underground tube along its entire course, only the pond in Petrovsky Park near the source and some of the decorative ponds in the Moscow Zoo are reminiscent of the river from which it was once fed. In addition, the so-called Humpy Bridge (Russian Горбатый мост ) has been preserved near the mouth of the Presnja . This white stone arch bridge , which formerly crossed the Presnja, dates from the middle of the 18th century and is now a listed building.

The Presnja has two left tributaries called Kabanka and Bubna , which are also laid underground. Since the Presnja also flows past industrial plants, it is heavily polluted by chemical waste water. However, a sewage treatment plant is installed at the mouth, which prevents the chemicals from flowing further into the Moscow River.

The location near its mouth is named after the river. The district in the west of the center of Moscow between the garden ring and the Moscow City business district is called “Presnensky” or simply “Presnja”. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, this district was considered an industrial workers' settlement and was one of the main fights during the Russian Revolution in 1905 . For this reason, the town was named after the October Revolution Krasnaya Presnja , literally "Red Presnja". This toponym later gave the Krasnopresnenskaya underground station of the Moscow Metro its name, which is still valid today. In the district there is also the Krasnopresnenskaya embankment of the Moskva, the Presnja-Towarnaja freight station on the Little Moscow Railway Ring and the Presnja Moscow football club also existed until 2006 .
