The crab mill in 2016

The old crab mill is a historical building between Niederursel , Weißkirchen and Oberursel , not far from the desolation of the former settlement Mittelursel, which perished in the Thirty Years War .

history

The Krebsmühle is documented for the first time under the name Krebsmühl on a copper engraving from around 1600 that depicts the course of the Urselbach . The year 1430 is also handwritten on a later replica of this card. The mill is also mentioned in a document under the name undere Mühl . The name comes from a district known as Am Kräbsen since the 16th century . In 1614 a certain Lorenz Best is named as the leaseholder of the Cancer Morning .

In 1732 the crab mill was operated as a flour mill and converted by Johan Mates and Anna Markraeta Rauch and given a house. In 1825, the married couple Conrad and Anna Maria Scheller provided the site with a farm building that includes living space, storage sheds and stables. This part of the building was demolished in 1973.

In 1852, the new owners Philip Joseph and Justina Dröser gave the site the shape it still has today. In 1881 the mill building and house were destroyed by a large fire, but rebuilt by Carl and Maria Dröser in the same year. As the last member of the Dröser family, Adam Heinrich Dröser ran the crab mill, which he had expanded into a Taunus bread factory . He died in 1948 and operations ceased in 1950.

In 1952 Paul Schyma purchased the property and built a three-story factory building. The Weißkirchen bread factory that was established there supplied around 900 bakeries in the area, as well as in Frankfurt , Ober- and Hintertaunus , Wiesbaden and Mainz with 19 VW buses . The historic parts of the building were not used and fell into disrepair. After the death of Paul Schyma in 1974, the Berlin bread manufacturer Horst Schiesser acquired the site to set up a branch for his Geschi-Brot company. However, this plan failed due to the monument protection requirements for the historic buildings, which is why operations were finally shut down in 1975.

In 1978, the workers' self-help initiative acquired a lease agreement for the site, which was finally passed on to the non-profit organization Help for Self-Help eV (HSH eV), which was the result of this initiative, as the carrier of the cancer mill. He manages the income from renting and leasing, which is used to finance the maintenance and expansion of the crab mill. Any surpluses and 10% of the total rental income annually flow into charitable projects and primarily support the work of the BASA Foundation to promote youth work and youth research.

The economic activities of HSH eV are summarized in the Krebsmühle GmbH, which was named “Company of the Month” by the Hessian state government in 2010 for its social commitment. The core business of Krebsmühle GmbH are HolzCleanic, a specialist company for stripping and woodworm treatment from furniture and the manufacture of furniture made of natural wood, which has earned a reputation among furniture connoisseurs well beyond Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main area. Other businesses located in the Krebsmühle include an e-bike specialist shop, dog physiotherapy, restaurant & gallery, yoga studio, an environmental laboratory and a publishing house.
