Circle cutter for drywall
Circle cutter consisting of knives on a knife disc, with center drill

A circular cutter (engl. Circle cutter ) is the hollow drill derived tool with adjustable cutting , so that different diameter can be cut. Circle cutters are used for all kinds of installation work, for holes with a diameter of more than 50 mm, such as socket holes, cable breakthroughs , water drains, etc. Holes cut with a circle cutter are torn-free compared to conventional hole saws.

Depending on the nature of the cutting edges (knives), so-called HSS circular cutters or HM circular cutters are available in stores: the HSS cutting edges made of High Speed Steel ( high-speed steel ) are for plastics and acrylic, while the cutting edges made of hard metal are for wood, tiles, bricks, Plaster, plastic are. The lengths of the cutting tools are different so that a variable drilling depth is possible.

Operating modes

Manual circle cutter

Circle cutters for drywall construction (e.g. for hole cutouts in plasterboard ) are operated manually, as are manual glass circle cutters with suction cups and hard metal wheels .

Mechanical circle cutter

There are two types of circle cutters that can be operated on hand drills and pillar drills :

  • A circle cutter model is a tool consisting of a center piece with a crossbar and two knife holders with knives. The knife holders are adjusted by sliding and clamping. With some circle cutters of this type, both steel holders (knife holders) can be adjusted centrally with a spindle.
  • Other circle cutters consist of a circle cutter shaft which takes a knife disc on which knives (cutting edges) are attached in pairs. The pairs of knives each consist of a leading and a main cutting edge that is set back a little. The wedge-shaped pre-cutting edge cuts the edge of the hole, while the main cutting edge clears out the material. A center drill in the shaft fixes the material to be processed; no center drill is used in models for stationary drilling machines. The desired hole diameter is set on the cutter disc using spacers. Some versions can be connected to a chip and dust extractor, a hood made of transparent plastic offers protection against dust when working in the ceiling, wall and floor area.
