List of savings banks in Austria

The Kremser Bank und Sparkassen AG is a regional bank in Krems on the Danube in the Wachau ( Lower Austria ). With seven branches, more than 27,000 customers are served in the catchment area and beyond. The Kremser Bank employs around 120 people and is one of the largest employers in the Krems district.

The owner of the Kremser Bank is the private foundation Sparkasse Krems and thus the direct successor of the Vereinssparkasse founded in 1856. The bank is a member of the cooperation and liability association of the Austrian savings banks .

history

In 1852 the notary and then mayor of the city of Krems Ferdinand Dinstl initiated the establishment of the Kremser Sparkasse. On July 24, 1854, the foundation was approved with conditions. Over a year later, the Interior Ministry approved the statutes and rules of procedure. After almost four years of preparation, the “Sparkasse in Krems” was opened on January 2nd, 1856 in the premises of the town hall; it is therefore the oldest bank in Krems.

In the first 25 years of Sparkasse Krems, the company was characterized by significant growth. During this time, the Sparkasse's advance payment association was founded, the maintenance of a pawnshop , a coin reform , the Austro-Prussian War and the stock market crash of 1873 took place . Due to the growing business operations, the Sparkasse was also forced to move spatially at this time. From 1869 to 1938, the Sparkasse Krems was located on Oberen Landstrasse.

The next 25 years were characterized by technical and economic upheaval. For example, at Christmas 1881, the meeting room of the Sparkasse was lit for the first time with gas lanterns. The promotion of communal, cultural and school issues was the focus of charitable activities. The economic upheaval also brought Sparkasse Krems its first competition at this time.

Political unrest, a global economic crisis , steadily rising unemployment and the low consumption power of the population shaped the first 50 years of the 20th century. In 1942, the previously independent savings banks Mautern, Spitz and Weißenkirchen were incorporated into the Sparkasse Krems. On June 23, 1956, the “Sparkasse in Krems” celebrated its centenary.

In the years up to 1981, among other things, the main establishment on Ringstrasse was established, electronic data processing was introduced, real estate and owner-occupied property were renovated and five new branches were opened. The first cash dispenser in Krems was installed, the check card was introduced and a number of new banking products were developed. When Sparkasse Krems was converted into a stock corporation in 1992, the name was also changed to “Kremser Bank and Sparkassen Aktiengesellschaft” in order to underline its claim to be a strong regional bank. At the same time, the new legal form should point to the solid foundation of the traditional savings bank.

Savings banks, such as the Kremser Bank, still have the same mission today as they did 150 years ago: to invest a large part of the money they generate in facilities that have been created for the general public. So they offer more than just interest on the savings. With the entry in the commercial register on October 7, 1999, the owner of the Kremser Bank was converted into a private foundation so that this idea can also be implemented in the future. This ensures that the institute can act independently and independently in the long term. In the same year, the Sparkasse Krems private foundation made a generous donation to the Institute for Preventive and Applied Sports Medicine amounting to one million schillings.

Around 95% of Austrian savings banks take part in a joint liability scheme for their sector. With the Liability Association for the Savings Banks, an instrument was created in 2001 that 100% safeguards customer deposits. After all legal and infrastructural prerequisites had been created, the renovation of the main building of the Kremser Bank on the Ringstrasse began in May 2001.

The Kremser Bank and the Sparkasse Herzogenburg-Neulengbach founded a new company called sMS Marktservice für Sparkassen GmbH in 2017 - with a 50-50 participation . This should relieve the two companies of internal activities and guarantee more efficient handling processes.

Selected charitable projects

The Kremser Bank sees the continuation of its founding concept as an investment in social, ecological and economic issues. A commitment that goes far beyond the actual business activity of a bank. The promotion of cultural, sporting and school projects is an important part of the corporate culture of the Kremser Bank.

1863 - Subsidy of 7000 guilders for the construction of the state high school in Krems. 1898 - Purchase and donation of the music pavilion in the "New Park". 80,000 kroner grant for the construction of the Krems deep spring water pipeline in 1908 - 50,000 kroner are donated to equip the Krems hospital. With the donation of 60,000 crowns, the introduction of electric lights in Mautern can be made possible. 1920 - Basic donation for the Wetterhäuslpark worth 57,500 crowns 1999 - Million check for health care (IPAS Institute for Preventive and Sports Medicine in Krems Hospital) 2003 - Sparkasse Krems private foundation donates 50,000 euros to associations and non-profit institutions in the course of the 125th anniversary celebration Sparkasse Spitz 2009 - € 20,000 flood aid for affected families from the Wachau.
