The crucifixion shrine from 1588 is a torture in the Lower Franconian community of Sommerach . It was built as a so-called monolith shrine in the course of the Counter Reformation .

history

The so-called monolithic wayside shrines shaped the region around Schweinfurt during the Counter Reformation . The Würzburg prince-bishops promoted the erection of these religious monuments throughout the diocese. The reason for this was, among other things, the spread of Lutheran teaching and the turning away from the old faith by the Free Imperial City of Schweinfurt. The wayside shrine is classified as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments .

The Sommeracher wayside shrine was created by a stonemason who created several of these tortures between Volkach and Schweinfurt between 1584 and 1609. It was about the master Hansjörg W., which can be traced back to a stonemason's mark on the stick. The wayside shrine was created in 1588, at the time of the Würzburg prince-bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn . The founder was Antonius Sturm from Sommerach, who dedicated the wayside shrine to the Münsterschwarzach abbot Johannes IV. Burckhardt .

The wayside shrine was located in Volkacher Strasse on the edge of the Sommeracher Altort until 2015 . In the course of the village renewal, the stick was moved and is now on Nordheimer Straße in the historic village center.

description

The wayside shrine stood on Volkacher Strasse until 2015

The monolithic wayside shrines all have a similar appearance. The rectangular, massive columns merge into a block-like headboard. All were made from a single stone. The base has a square base, which is often heavily bevelled in the upper area. Most of the sticks are decorated with coats of arms . In the majority the depictions of crucifixion scenes predominate in the essay.

The crucifixion is also shown on the Sommerach wayside shrine. Below is the founder's name "ANTHONIVS STVRM". The coat of arms of the prince-bishop can be seen on the shaft of the stick. In the back the baptism of Jesus is carved in the Jordan, the coat of arms of the Münsterschwarzach monastery refers to the village lords. The inscription "... M ... ANIA / JOHAN / ES TAVFET / SOLI DEO GLORIA" can be seen. The sides are decorated with depictions of Saints Peter (left) and Andreas (right), as well as the coat of arms of Johannes Burckhardt.
