The crucifixion shrine in Volkach

The crucifixion shrine from around 1460 in Volkach is the oldest torture in the Lower Franconian town. It is located in the lower suburb on Josef-Wächter-Straße.

history

The history of the wayside shrine is closely linked to the Maria im Weingarten church in front of the town of Volkach. The church, originally the original parish church of the Volkach settlement, was an important Marian pilgrimage site in the Diocese of Würzburg in the Middle Ages . The pilgrims first visited the city and then went out through the Gaibacher Tor to the pilgrimage church on the Kirchberg. The wayside shrine was probably built to offer the pilgrims a first prayer station.

The stick was created around 1460 and was donated by unknown donors. Originally it was in a different location in the lower suburb, it was only moved to its current location in 1968 due to road construction work. The open chapel with which it is built over today was only built in the Baroque period . Another change was made when the stone cross also located there was moved to the Hallburgkippe. The wayside shrine is classified as an architectural monument .

description

The simple chapel that surrounds the wayside shrine was made from rubble stones and consists of four arched columns. It ends with a simple hipped roof. Inside the ceiling is decorated with the monogram IHS and is framed by stucco. The wayside shrine made of red-brown sandstone stands in the center of the chapel. It consists of a pedestal , a base and a rectangular attachment. It ends in a gable roof, which is crowned by two finials.

The wedge-shaped pedestal leads over to the 1.73 m high pillar. The attachment, however, has a height of 2 m. On the north side a relief of the crucifixion of Christ can be seen. The crucified is framed by two assistant figures. In the south, St. Michael is depicted as a soul weigher with a raised sword and scales. The eastern narrow side shows St. Peter , but his attribute, the key, no longer exists. In the west stands the risen Christ .
