The Kreuzkapelle near Kransberg , a district of Usingen im Taunus , is located about 750 meters southwest of the village in a clearing in the forest on the flank of the Kuhardt mountain and above Kransberg Castle .

history

In the place of the chapel there used to be a cross that is mentioned when inspecting the "Mörler Mark". According to the note from the teacher Junker in the school chronicle of 1852, the chapel was built shortly before the castle was renovated in 1700. On the occasion of a roof renovation, the year 1699 was confirmed. A copper plate was found showing this year. The chapel was built by Count Casimir Ferdinand Adolph von Bassenheim shortly before his death as a private chapel. The construction work is attributed to Benedikt Burtscher , the plans were published between 1706 and 1710 in the Novum Architecturae speculum by Nikolaus Person under the title Sacellum S. Crucis in medio Amphitheatri devotionis perspicuum Crasbergis . The chapel stands on a round plateau created for this purpose, which is enclosed on one side by a stone wall. The entrance to the chapel was accessed through a hornbeam avenue from the start. This is regularly maintained through additional plantings and is protected as a natural monument (see list of natural monuments in Usingen # Hainbuchenallee ). The chapel is built on a trapezoidal plan. The dimensions are 4.34 meters at the front, 2.95 meters at the rear and 4.68 meters at the sides.

The Catholic parish of Kransberg has repeatedly paid for repairs over the centuries, although it has never been the owner. All applications to the various governments, such as the Nassau domain administration, to which the von Bassenheim family sold their goods in Kransberg, or the Prussian state government to transfer this chapel to the Kransberg parish, were refused. Even today it is not owned by the church of Kransberg

In 1851 extensive repairs were carried out on the chapel. Count Hugo von Bassenheim financed part of the work, additional money came from the collection. Bishop Josef Blum rededicated the Kreuzkapelle on September 14, 1852.

In 1921 renovation work was carried out again. In the course of this work, the rear window was bricked up. Two days before Confirmation in 1922, memorial plaques were put up for those who died in the First World War .

In 2010 the roof and facade were renovated.

The Kuhardt ring wall is also located on the mountain plateau .
