The Kreuzkirche is the only Protestant church in the Wiedenbrück district of the twin town of Rheda-Wiedenbrück .

history

In 1859 the evangelical congregation, which at that time had about 160 members, laid the foundation stone for a small church about 13 m long and 8 m wide. The church was consecrated in 1860. In 1866 the municipality, which had previously belonged to Rheda, became independent.

In 1939 there were around 8,000 people living in Wiedenbrück. 571 of them belonged to the Protestant community. By accepting displaced persons after the Second World War - mainly from Silesia and East and West Prussia - the number of parishioners rose to over 2000 by 1949. Therefore, the old church was to be rebuilt and enlarged. During the renovation, which began in November 1952, the congregation moved to St. Mary's Church with its church services .

During the construction phase structural damage and unforeseen collapses occurred and made it necessary to completely rebuild the church. Nevertheless, construction was the new church by the President of the in November 1953 after only one year Westphalian State Church Ernst Wilm and the superintendent of the church district Gütersloh Heinrich Lohmann inaugurated .

The new church can accommodate 450 people.

Thanks to donations and income from bazaars, a new organ with 16 registers and 990 pipes could be purchased in 1991.

Furnishing

Interior of the Kreuzkirche

The church is simply furnished. The crucifixion group by Bernd Hartmann is an eye-catcher , an important testimony to the Wiedenbrück school .

The nativity scene acquired in 1948 comes from the sculptor Heinrich Püts , who created it around 1920/1930. Originally consisting only of the Holy Family , over the years it has been expanded to its present-day form through work by the sculptor Petra Rentrup .

The original, restrained gray color scheme of the interior was replaced a few years ago by the current warm color scheme.

The four-bell ringing is housed in the approximately 27-meter-high tower. It is one of the largest still preserved steel bells in northern Germany.

The church windows were donated by the neighboring parishes of the Gütersloh church district.
