The backside

The cross stone is made of sandstone, is moderately weathered and has the dimensions 87 × 54 × 17 cm. A relief-like Latin cross is incorporated on both sides . The small monument has been moved several times and has been at its current location since 2009. An information board was set up on site in 2010 by the Hausen village association.

Their text reads:

Atonement crosses are monuments of medieval law. They were part of so-called atonement contracts, which were concluded between two warring parties in order to end a blood feud (eye for eye, tooth for tooth) after murder or manslaughter. In addition to placing an atonement cross, the murderer was obliged to read masses, go on a penitential pilgrimage to Rome and make an atonement to the relatives of the victim. Nobody knows exactly when and why this atonement cross was erected. However, it should have been built in the 16th century. It is reported that in ancient times it stood on the so-called "Kreuzacker". When the federal motorway was built in 1935/36 it had to give way. It was moved into the embankment hedge of the state road, about 300 meters north of the current location. It was very important to the Hausen village association to place the atonement cross in a worthy place. It has now been erected opposite the entrance to Hausen and was presented to the public at a ceremony in 2009. Dorfverein Hausen, December 2010

history

The cross stone is probably a typical accident cross or atonement cross . It is believed to have been erected in the 16th century. Nothing is known about the exact time and the reason for the installation, as well as the legends about the cross. It is reported that the stone used to stand in the Schwarzachtal on the so-called cross fields . When the Reichsautobahn was built in 1935/36 it had to be moved. It was now on an embankment about 300 meters further north on the state road St 2227 Hausen - Günzenhofen. In December 2009, the Hausen village association set up the Kreuzstein at its current location.
