Theodor Block (also: Theodorus Block and Theodor Bloccius or Theodorus Bloccius ; full name Dietrich Theodor Block ; born March 22, 1578 in Groß Varlingen , † October 19, 1647 in Hanover ) was a German lawyer , Princely Braunschweig-Lüneburg Council and district and border secretary.

Life

"Theodori Bloccii" was born in "Verlingen" in 1578 in the Wölpe office and was the only son of the farmer Hermen Block and his wife Hylla, née Wipeking. After his baptism he received private lessons in reading and writing as a child in the house of the "Oppermann" and, at the age of 10, went to Hanover independently . There he lived with Hansen Kückern, his grandmother's brother, and attended the Hanover school. After a few years, his writing and reading successes prompted him to work as a helper at another relative, the rector of the Hanoverian Latin School Christian Beckmann . He then taught the sons of the lawyer and Hanoverian city counsel Konrad Bünting and then served Bünting as a clerk for a few years.

For a degree requested by Block, he first passed an aptitude test and was then able to study at various universities through grants initially from the von Holle family for 4 years and then further through a grant from the City of Hanover. He studied law at the University of Marburg , the University of Jena and the Academia Julia in Helmstedt . From December 8, 1604, he worked as a consultant in the Princely Council Chamber, from 1606 as a chamber substitute and registrar and from 1613 as a chamber secretary. In this function, he sent correspondence to the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation and all the electors of the empire, and served as councilor and secretary successively for his three sovereigns, Duke Friedrich Ulrich , Duke August the Elder, and finally Duke Georg von Braunschweig-Lüneburg . At times parallel to this, Block worked as the official of the Lower Saxony District and as its secretary. According to other sources, Block was also referred to as the Princely Consistorial Councilor .

Theodor Block was able to read even small print Dutch fonts himself into old age without glasses. He died after an eight-week illness with the help of the local doctor and his wife. The evangelical Christian was buried on November 2, 1647 in the Hanover market church.

family

In 1607 Theodor Block married Catharina Schirmer (* 1577 in Wolfenbüttel; † March 5, 1626 ibid), daughter of Wolfenbüttel Oberweinschenk Hans Schirmer and widow of the bailiff Heinrich Rabe in the office of Schöningen . The couple had three sons and two daughters. A son and a daughter did not survive their father. At the time of his death, Block was the grandfather of 4 male grandchildren.

After the death of his first wife, Block married on April 4, 1627 in Hanover at the age of 61, Catharina Falkenreich (born May 6, 1575 in Hanover), daughter of the Hanoverian citizen, Kramer and councilor Gottschalk Falkenreich and his wife Catharina, née Jungknecht. Catharina Falckenreich was the widow of Mayor Erich Reiche at the time . After her death, he married his fourth wife, Catharina Gärtner, widow of Berend Eggers, in 1639 - still at the time of the Thirty Years War - with whom, according to his own information, he "had a quiet and peaceful marriage" for around 9 years until the end of his life.

In addition to his widow “Catharinen Gertners”, Theodor Block left two sons, the citizen Werner Dietrich Block and the Princely Braunschweig-Lüneburg Chamber Clerk Julius Johann Block. Also Hedwig Helene Block, wife of the Princely Braunschweig-Lüneburg Chamber and Lehn-Secretary “Herm JULII AUGUSTI VITI”. Those named were clients for the funeral sermon written by Nikolaus Baring in 1647 .
