War of the clones
War of the Clones (Original Title: Old Man's War ) is a military science fiction novel by John Scalzi from 2005.
action
The story is told by the first-person narrator John Perry and is about his experiences with the Colonial Defense Forces (CDF). Perry recounts his rise from recruit to captain. The universe has many different species that compete with and live in harmony with humans, the latter being rare. Humanity competes with the other intelligentsia for good colonizable planets and their rare resources. Perry has to fight a variety of different life forms.
The narrator is 75 years old and retired when he joined the KVA. His consciousness is transferred into a new body cloned from his own DNA and enhanced. The bodies are stronger, faster, have better reflexes, cat eyes, green skin and are equipped with some technical improvements. One of the improvements is the BrainPal, a neural interface that allows him to interact with other WIP members, retrieve large amounts of data from the central KVA database and much more.
He is now completing the basic training on Beta Pyxis III. Then he disembarks with the Modesto. First he meets the Consu, whom he cleverly defeats. More battles take place before he participates as an experienced fighter in the Battle of Coral against the Rraey, which ends in disaster before it really begins. The Rraey can predict the arrival point of the incoming troops and battleships and destroy them. Perry and few others can save themselves to the planet's surface, where they are immediately shot at. Perry is extremely seriously injured, is already considered dead, but is rescued by the ghost brigade, a special unit, after a few days. The head of the unit that saved him, Jane Sagan, looks like Perry's dead wife. Perry tracks down Sagan after his recovery. It was actually bred from his wife's DNA, but has no memories. Nevertheless, she causes Perry to participate in another attack on Coral.
The battle is tough, Jane is seriously injured and needs treatment as soon as possible. John manages to save her from the battlefield. John also finds the key to the technology that enables the Rraey to locate incoming ships. He is celebrated as a hero for his achievements, promoted to captain and highly honored.
