War memorial (Stockach)
The war memorial ( war memorial ) in Stockach , a town in the district of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg , was inaugurated on June 3, 1934 to commemorate those who died in the First World War after over ten years of local discussion about design and location .
The sculptor Erwin Krumm (1898–1980) from Elzach designed the war memorial that stands on the main street in front of the facade of the St. Oswald Church .
The monument in the form of a flattened 15 meter high obelisk , which stands on a cube-shaped base, is provided with a metal iron cross on each side in the upper area , which was cast by the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik in Geislingen an der Steige . The area at the top of the obelisk made it possible to light a bonfire during commemoration ceremonies . Relief panels made of artificial stone are attached above the base on each side of the obelisk . The sculptures in relief were shaped by the Freiburg art formulator Roose. The larger-than-life figures, elaborated in detail, step out of their frame almost fully.
On the west side ("Knight Georg, killing the dragon") St. George pushes his lance into the dragon lying on the ground. Originally the inscription "Der Deutschen Zwietracht right into the heart" was to be read on his shield. The names of 110 soldiers from Stockach who fell or died as a result of the war are named on a bronze plaque under this relief. The other panels are titled "The Wounded Man", "Marching Warriors Decorated with Oak Leaves, Singing Warriors" and "Falling Hero". Under the last-mentioned relief is the inscription "Dedicated to the fallen of the world war from their hometown Stockach".
