location

It is located in the churchyard north of the Sankt-Briccius-Kirche in the Cracau district of Magdeburg at the address Babelsberger Straße 1.

History and architecture

The butcher Otto Rosenberg gave the suggestion to erect a war memorial for Cracau on November 20, 1919 at a meeting of church bodies. On November 23, the merchant Liesegang handed over 1,000 Reichsmarks to Superintendent Langenau for this purpose . At a meeting of representatives of 14 local associations on March 12, 1920, a request was made to the Cracau population for co-financing. Initially, it was planned to be installed in the communal cemetery or in the area of the former ski jumping facility near Cracau. The magistrate of the city of Magdeburg refused to approve it. On March 28, 1922, the Evangelical Consistory approved the installation at the current location.

A payment of 15,700 marks was made to T. Conrad & Sohn for the memorial stone .

On the side facing away from the street, the stone bore the inscription:

The grateful Cracau 1914 1918 to the fallen
sons

The memorial, a large upright boulder for the residents of Cracau who fell in World War I , was consecrated on November 26, 1922. After the memorial service with a sermon by the superintendent Langenau, the actual consecration took place from 11.00 am in pouring rain with a consecration speech from Langenau and choral singing. The clubs each laid their own wreaths with a short contribution. In addition, private wreaths were laid. A cross of white roses and white carnations was set up as decoration.

At the exit, collections were made for war orphans. The last meeting of the Monument Committee took place on November 29, 1922 in the Corneliushaus, where it was decided that the remainder of the collection of 6,317.45 marks was awarded to widows in need.

A list from 1932 shows that Cracau had 104 dead in the First World War.

The war memorial is listed in the local monument register under registration number 094 71104 as an architectural monument .
