The war memorial in Talheim in the district of Heilbronn , Baden-Württemberg , is a memorial for the soldiers of the community who died in the First and Second World Wars and for the citizens of Talheim who died as a result of war events.

History and Fallen

The siblings Ludwig (1869–1955), Albert (1877–1951) and Karoline (1870–1955) Zoller, who first emigrated to South Africa, supported the erection of the monument with 200 marks in 1925, while the monument association was in its four years of existence initiated the creation of the monument to the fallen .

The mention of the civilians Frida Bräuninger and Erika Scherb, who are listed as victims in connection with the Second World War, should be emphasized .

The large number of victims in the Second World War (91 fallen and 37 missing citizens) is due to the fact that in April 1945 the US Army and German troops, which were in retreat, met in Talheim and from Haigern and Hundsberg the village came under crossfire was taken. In this respect, the monument is a historical memorial that commemorates one of the many retreat battles that took place in Germany in the last weeks of the war in 1945.

Original location

It was originally built to characterize the townscape in the center of the town - on what is now the Rathausplatz - below the Upper Castle and could also be seen when the Bottwartal Railway, which is now closed, was passing through the town . On November 29, 1925, the memorial was inaugurated with a large participation of the Talheim population.

At the memorial service for the fallen in World War I, the Protestant and Catholic pastors and, as representatives of the Israelites, the teacher Straus gave speeches. Straus' brother in faith Moritz Hirschfeld is inscribed on the monument. Sixteen soldiers were killed in Talheim in connection with the German Blitzkrieg , and another soldier was reported missing by the Talheim mayor.

During National Socialism , the memorial was part of Adolf-Hitler-Platz , which was previously called Kelterplatz and served as a parade area for the party. The square was redesigned between 1951 and 1953 in connection with the Schozach regulation .

A pedestrian bridge leading to the memorial, although insignificant for the defense, was blown up by the Wehrmacht in April 1945 .

New monument

In the course of a redesign of the center of the village, the monument was laid down around 1980 and re-created in the community cemetery, apparently using the original surrounding stones.
