The Schozach [ ˈʃɔtsax ] is a right tributary of the Neckar in Baden-Württemberg . At around 26 km in length, it mainly runs through the southeast of the Heilbronn district . The medieval Schozachgau was named after the river .

course

The Schozach rises at 301  m above sea level. NN in the Dautenklinge on the western edge of the Löwensteiner Mountains , below the Untergruppenbacher district Vorhof. Then it touches the places Ober- and Unterheinriet, Abstatt , Auenstein , Ilsfeld , the place of the same name Schozach and Talheim , before moving between the Heilbronn districts of Horkheim and Sontheim at 154  m above sea level. NN flows into the Neckar. Overall, the course of the Schozach describes a large C, open to the north: it flows to Auenstein in a south-westerly direction, to shortly after Ilsfeld to the west, then to the north.

From a natural point of view, the Schozach runs through the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains and the Neckar Basin . From a geological point of view, it crosses the transition zone between Keuper and Muschelkalk : the source emerges in the layers of the middle Keuper , and most of the upper reaches are in the lower Keuper layers. The transition to Muschelkalk west of Ilsfeld is clearly noticeable in the change in the shape of the valley: the valley, which is still wide at Ilsfeld, narrows almost suddenly, and the river digs into a narrow valley that is up to 50 meters deep compared to the surroundings apart from Talheim no other settlement offers more space. Outcrops of the rock layers can be seen in several quarries on the edge of this valley section .

Catchment area

The catchment area of the Schozach has an area of 93.5 km², to which the two largest tributaries, Gruppenbach am Mittellauf and Deinbach am Unterlauf, contribute 16.4 and 14.6 km². It covers most of the lowlands between the Neckar and Löwenstein Mountains. In the north are the Schweinsberg southeast of Heilbronn, the Sandberg south of Lehrensteinsfeld and another "Sandberg" southwest of Löwenstein's high points of the watershed, in the south the Wunnenstein north of Großbottwar . The Buchbach still flows to the east, but only from a point not far from the Bleichsee near Löwenstein , as the water of the Buchbach upper course is fed to the Bleichsee and thus to the Sulm in the north by means of a canal .

The main watersheds of the Schozach border against the catchment areas of Sulm in the north and northeast, the Bottwar in the south and southeast and the Neckar itself in the southwest and west. The other competitors are smaller streams to the Neckar.

The most important tributaries of the Schozach are the Gruppenbach near Auenstein and the Deinbach just before the confluence in Sontheim, both are about 7 km long.

In the catchment area, the communities Untergruppenbach, Abstatt, Ilsfeld, Talheim and Flein are wholly or largely, the communities Lauffen am Neckar , Neckarwestheim , Großbottwar , Beilstein and Löwenstein with small parts of their area.

natural reserve

The upper reaches of the Schozach runs as far as Abstatt partially in the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park . Nature reserves are not designated in the area of the stream; The following areas are under landscape protection :

  • Headwaters of the Schozach ; this 18  hectare area extends from the forecourt down to the exit of the Schozach and was placed under protection in 1982.
  • Brenntenklinge - Upper Schozachtal near Oberheinriet ; the 44 hectare area on the upper reaches has been protected since 1979.
  • Schozachtal between Ilsfeld and Talheim with 112 ha since 1983.
  • Massenbach, Leinbach, Schozach and Wollenbach ; this 13 hectare area is located below Talheim and extends to the border with Heilbronn.
  • Schozachtal - Weidach - Wertwiesen from the Heilbronn city limits to the confluence with the Neckar; The 63 hectare area was placed under protection in 1983.

The 2004 water report classified the water of the Schozach and the Gruppenbach in quality class II (moderately polluted); the deinbach below Flein is classified as critically polluted (quality class II – III).

On April 4, 2019, the Schozach was poisoned by a mixture of substances over a length of several kilometers. The death of numerous fish and ducks as well as microorganisms and plants was the result. According to Talheim's mayor Rainer Gräßle, the Schozach ecosystem was destroyed for years.

traffic

The canalized Schozach in Talheim

The Schozach is not navigable due to insufficient depth and water flow.

Middle and upper Schozachtal be of the country roads traversed L 1100 and L 1102 have the above local significance limited as cross-connections in the region of Heilbronn. The lower Schozach valley is unusable as a traffic route because of its deeply incised, narrow and winding shape and is only partially accompanied by roads. However, it was once crossed by the Bottwartalbahn , which connected Marbach am Neckar with Heilbronn and followed the course of the Schozach between Auenstein and Sontheim. The route of the now disused railway line has been converted into a cycle path which, as part of the Alb-Neckar cycle path, is part of the network of Baden-Württemberg state long- distance cycle paths .

Right exactly following the northern watershed, a forest hiking trail leads partly along the route of an old Roman path and often less than 100 m south of a steep step edge from Heilbronn to Löwenstein.
