War memorial chapel (Windischeschenbach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The war memorial chapel on the Calvary of the Upper Palatinate town of Windischeschenbach is looked after by the “Parish Community of St. Emmeram and Holy Spirit”.

history

On May 7, 1843, citizens of Windischeschenbach proposed building a small church on the Kalvarienberg (at that time "on the Hölzl") as a place for the storage of sacred utensils and the holding of services should the parish church of St. Emmeram burn down. This wish soon became a reality when the parish church fell victim to the great fire of 1848.

The plan for the church from the hand of master bricklayer Johann Bauer von Neustadt an der Waldnaab was approved after an exchange of letters with the Royal Ministry of the Interior in Munich. The foundation stone was laid on July 12, 1847. The citizens performed manual and tensioning services for the construction of the chapel . In 1881 the chapel was enlarged by three meters to its present size.

In 1951 the chapel was transferred to the Catholic Church Foundation Windischeschenbach (previously it was owned by the “Building Cooperative Eigenheim”) and rededicated as a war memorial chapel. On August 18, 1951, it was re-inaugurated at a returnees meeting . The church was renovated in 1983/84 with the help of the local returnees association, and the area in front of the church was also redesigned.

Construction

The chapel is a hall building with a pitched roof and a gable turret above the entrance portal, this has a pointed and broken pyramid roof with sound openings. The choir is closed on three sides.

Inside the church, the names of those killed and missing from the two World Wars in Windischeschenbach are placed on oak boards.

In front of the church is the war memorial for the fallen of the First World War (erected around 1920), dedicated to St. Georg as a dragon slayer.
