history

The structure was erected in 1875 and 1876 and crosses gypsum marl of the Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld formation ) in the Mittelkeuper .

In 1994 and 1995 the base vault was renovated and a slab track was installed. The structure is to be decommissioned as part of the Stuttgart 21 project .

The tunnel is used daily in both directions by 14 long-distance passenger trains , 36 regional trains , one empty S-Bahn train and five other trains (as of 2014).

On the four-stage condition rating scale from DB Netz, the structure was classified in category 3 in 2008, 2014 and 2017 ("Extensive damage to the structural part that does not affect the stability. It is still possible to repair it to check its economic viability. ").
