War usury offices were set up in several German countries before the First World War . Their task was to determine excessive prices in times of economic bottlenecks and to take action against usurers who wanted to take advantage of the plight of the people in times of war and its consequences. The war usury office was able to investigate it with the police and impose penalties.

Bavarian War Usury Office

Founded in December 1916 by King Ludwig III . In addition to his usual activities, from 1917 action should also be taken against surreptitious trafficking . Since the competences of the War Usury Office overlapped with those of the State Prize Examination Office, both offices were replaced by Dr. Tooth headed. In October of the same year the office was reorganized. The operational auditing department of the War Usury Office, which used economic means to combat excessive price increases, was merged with the now renamed State Price Office. Since April 1919 it has been subordinate to the newly created Ministry of Agriculture , but remained tied to the State Statistical Office . The purely police control and punishment of usury misconduct as part of the war usury office was continued under the name of the state usury defense agency until 1924 as an independent body in the Ministry of Agriculture.
