Georg Obst (born February 25, 1873 in Breslau ; † October 2, 1938 in Dresden - Blasewitz ) was an important German professor of business administration at the University of Breslau . During his lifetime, the number of copies of his publications already reached a level that no other contemporary business economist has even come close to.

biography

After attending grammar school and a three-year bank apprenticeship in Breslau, Obst began studying law and political science at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin in 1899 and continued it later at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg , where he began in 1903 with the Dissertation "Central Banking System in the United States of America" ​​for Dr. rer. pole. received his doctorate .

Until May 1906, Obst was head of the deposit box of Dresdner Bank in Berlin , where he also founded the college for bank officials. From 1906 to 1910 he worked as a lecturer for banking and finance at the Handelshochschule Berlin .

In 1910, Obst became a member of the board of directors at Mitteldeutsche Privatbank and became the managing director of its Leipzig branch. He continued his teaching activities from 1910 to 1914 as a lecturer at the Leipzig Graduate School of Management. In 1915 he completed his habilitation at the University of Wroclaw with the title "The international payment adjustments" and received the venia legendi in business administration. From 1915 to 1919 he was a councilor in the Saxon Ministry of the Interior, where he was entrusted with the management of the state price office and later also the Saxon war usury office.

In 1919 Obst was appointed associate professor and in 1927 full professor of business administration at the University of Breslau. There he was director of the business administration institute he had created. Since the winter semester 1932/33, Obst was also a member of the Academic Senate of the University of Breslau.

At the same time, Obst was the executive chairman of the Wroclaw University of Applied Sciences courses for economics and administration. Practical training was particularly important to him and he is particularly committed to promoting the second educational path. To expand his knowledge, Obst undertook numerous research trips to England, France and the Orient.

On October 2nd, 1938, Obst died after a long and serious illness.
