Administration building of the Frankfurt am Main police headquarters
The administrative building of the Frankfurt am Main police headquarters is the seat of most of the Frankfurt am Main police headquarters . The building opened in 2002 at Adickesallee 70 in the Nordend district is one of the most important structures in Frankfurt's architectural history since the turn of the millennium.
The design comes from the Frankfurt offices Kalmbacher & Ludwig and KSP Engel and Zimmermann , which emerged as the winner of an architectural competition in September 1995 .
location
The new building of the police headquarters is in the north end at the intersection of Adickesallee and Eschersheimer Landstrasse , one of the city's most heavily used road nodes. Eschersheimer Landstrasse is one of the most important radial roads ( arterial roads ) from the city center in a northerly direction, while Adickesallee is part of the Frankfurter Alleenring crossing here , the most important ring road in Frankfurt. The prominent location contributes greatly to the building's fame, as tens of thousands of drivers drive past it every day.
The underground station Miquel- / Adickesallee / Police Headquarters of the A-route (lines U1, U2, U3, U8) is located at the crossing . Since the opening of the new building, the police headquarters has been included in the subtitle of the station name and is announced as the next stop on the subway trains.
The PX Shopping Center for the members of the US armed forces stationed in Frankfurt was located on the property until 1995 . After the closure of all American military facilities in Frankfurt, large and now no longer used areas were up for conversion in the surrounding districts (northern Westend , northern Nordend and Dornbusch ) . In addition to numerous residential construction projects, this also made it possible, for example, to move the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University to the IG-Farben building and to expand a new Westend campus .
The building
The police headquarters building has a rectangular floor plan with an edge length of approximately 240 × 140 m, with the longer sides facing south (Adickesallee) and north (Polizeimeister-Kaspar-Strasse), the shorter ones facing west (Eschersheimer Landstrasse) and east (Bertramstrasse) is aligned. The six-story building takes up an entire block of streets . The gross floor area is 129,000 m², the building has 1,500 office rooms. Construction began in 1998 and was completed in November 2002. The construction costs amounted to 267 million euros.
A total of eight inner courtyards are created by an eight-storey block arranged parallel to the long sides in the interior of the block and six transverse bars arranged transversely between it and the north and south wings. The main entrance is on Adickesallee, roughly opposite Eysseneckstraße. Through one of these inner courtyards, the visitor reaches the central block, in which the central access structure and the main access to the various offices are located.
The exterior of the building appears extremely austere and reduced. The window axes (over 40 per long side) are designed in such a way that two storeys are visually combined. This creates monumental horizontal bands running over the entire facade above the second and fourth floors. Only in the facade facing Adickesallee is the stone facade interrupted by the glass entrance wing, which is spanned over a width of 42 meters without any supports.
In contrast to the austerity of the exterior, the inner courtyards, which have different floor plans due to the irregularly arranged crossbars, are designed differently and are also used differently.
Forensic teaching material collection of the Frankfurt am Main police headquarters
In addition to the police headquarters and the 3rd police station responsible for the Nordend-West and Westend-Nord districts, the building also houses the Frankfurt Crime Museum . It goes back to a collection of teaching materials created by the Frankfurt police since around 1920. The sponsor of the collection is the State of Hesse, represented by the Frankfurt am Main Police Headquarters. On an area of around 200 square meters, various exhibits on the work of the Frankfurt police and on sensational historical criminal cases are shown, including the Nitribitt murder case and the homicides on the West Runway against two police officers at a demonstration on the West Runway in November 1987. The museum is open to the general public during the annual Night of the Museums . There are no general opening times. Guided tours for groups can be requested individually.
In 2004, in consultation with the management of the authorities, a support association was founded to support the collection.
