The Kristínartindar is an eroded volcanic mountain in southern Iceland . It is located in the municipality of Hornafjörður .
Surname
In Icelandic tindur means summit , the plural form of which is tindar . Kristín is a woman's name. Kristínartindar therefore means the summit of the Kristín .
location
It is the highest part of the original Skaftafell National Park in the Austur-Skaftafellssýsla district , about 100 km west of the town of Höfn , which is now part of the Vatnajökull National Park . The ridge at the foot of which the National Park Center is located lies between the Skaftafellsjökull glacier and Morsárdalur .
The area is sometimes referred to by the old community name Öræfi (Eng. Wasteland ), which can be traced back to the devastating eruptions of the nearby volcano Öræfajökull in the 14th century.
Geology and description
Kristínartindar are the eroded crater rim of an extinct volcano called Skaftafell , after which the original national park was named.
Two smaller peaks (979 and 850 m high) rise on the crater rim in the south and east, while the main peak rises to 1126 m in the north.
A narrow ridge connects the highest peak with a neighboring mountain, Skarðatindur (1385 m), which is only accessible to alpinists.
Hiking on the Kristínartindur
Marked hiking trails lead from the national park center to the Kristínartindar.
