Kristian Bernhard Knudsen

Kristian Bernhard Knudsen (born November 19, 1877 in Lillesand , Norway , † December 23, 1961 in Kristiansand ) was a Norwegian shipowner .

Life

Knudsen's father was Peder Knudsen (1835–1908), who together with his brother Ole had founded the shipbuilding and shipping company O. & P. ​​Knudsen in Lillesand in 1859.

Kristian Knudsen was an apprentice ship broker in Hamburg from 1898 to 1902 . In 1904 he moved to Kristiansand and established himself as a ship broker there. In the following year he founded his own shipping company, Kristian Knudsen & Co., which has been involved in a wide range of activities over the years: ship broker, ship freight, insurance and wood export.

In 1906 he married Elisabeth Malene Skjelbred, daughter of the shipowner OAT Skjelbred (1854–1939). The marriage had two sons, Oluf and Per.

In 1930 he joined his father-in-law's Skjelbreds Rederi A / S , which eventually became his main business, although he continued to run his company, Kristian Knudsen & Co. Knudsen was also the Russian Vice Consul in Kristiansand from 1919 to 1923 and the Greek Vice Consul in Kristiansand from 1919 to 1956. He was an active local politician and was Deputy Mayor of Kristiansand for several years . For 31 years he was on the board of the Kristiansands Mekaniske Verksted. He was also active in the shipping association and in the Kristiansand ship insurance association.

Kristian Knudsen died on December 23, 1961. His younger son Per Knudsen took over the company from his father, while the eldest son Oluf Skjebred-Knudsen took over the Skjelbreds Rederi.
